Etude House Sweet Recipe Review - Dear My Jelly Lips Talk JOR201 (Sweet Orange)

Hello, let's jump straight into my next review! It's another item from Etude House's new Hansel and Gretel inspired Sweet Recipe Collection, which I am slowly but surely buying my way through, lol!

I have here the Dear My Jelly Lips Talk lipstick, in shade JOR201 Sweet Orange - an insta-buy for me, as I have been obsessing over orange makeup recently~

The Dear My Jelly Lips comes in a range of 6 lipsticks and 2 lip tints. Aided by 5 plant extracts (bilberry, sugar cane, sugar maple, orange, and lemon), these lippies promise soft and elastic, vibrant and shiny, jelly coated lips!

I purchased this from ebay seller f2plus1 for $9.47.

Packaging wise, I find the white casing a teeny bit plain, particularly compared to the Dear My Blooming Lips range, which have pink tubes embellished with a cute bow, but I'm a bow maniac, so I'm biased?

The main point on the Dear My Jelly Lips packaging are the coloured beads circling the base of the tube - I think they represent jelly beans ^_^

Unboxed, and the bullet is half winded up
I love, love the outer packaging! I don't wanna throw it away T_T

And oh my goodness, this lipstick does smell like candy! My sis reckons it smells like those red liquorice sticks, but I think it smells like those soft fruit chewies ^^

It's not a very strong scent, though it is noticeable during application.

Fully winded up
The net weight is 3.4 grams

And look! The bullet itself is embossed with a stylised carriage in the shape of a heart. Cute!

The tube also has a fairly tight locking system (two raised bumps at the base to catch the lid), so the lid won't be easily able to slide off if you leave it in your handbag~

Etude describes these Jelly Lips-Talk lippies as sheer-coloured, and that's pretty much correct. JOR201 will not look as vibrantly orange as the promo pictures shown, especially on pigmented lips such as mine. But check out this video below - it seems to show up vibrantly for the model~

This jelly lipstick veers towards a more balmy-like texture, and at one or two coats will only provide the faintest sheen of orange colour on me. If you have naturally paler lips, you may see more colour coverage.

Layering this lipstick will give more colour, though it's still pretty sheer overall. I had to go about 6 coats (gently blotting in between) to get vaguely near orange, but was a bit sad that it never went close to an actual orange shade :(

One coat on naked lips
As you can see, it pretty much just looks like a sheer lip gloss/balm

Due to the balmy, moisturising texture I couldn't layer it over concealer as it just tended to mix together - though the resulting colour was quite a nice peachy-nude shade! I ended up using it over a brownish-nude lip pencil and I did end up loving the result - though again the colour wasn't orange, but more of a peachy shade.

Two coats over a brown/pink nude Essence lip liner
Slightly more orange, but still on the peachy side

So the sheerness of this lipstick was a bit of a disappointment, but I do love the moisturising formula, and I have been using this a lot on its own - it just glides onto the lips, and  gives quite a pretty, glossy look. It's kind of addicting to use, as it moisturises plus glossifies (my new made up word, lol) my lips at the same time, and since it's pretty sheer it's just so easy and quick to reapply when I'm out and about~

Lasting power is about 3-4 hours, and most of it will come off after eating or drinking, so it really is more of a lip balm/tint rather than a traditional lipstick.

If you're into natural looking glossy lips, this may appeal to you. But if you're after pigmentation, or a matte, non glossy lipstick you'd probably want to skip this.

I actually like balmy type lip products, but I have to say this Etude one was more sheerer than I expected - I really wanted to have orange lips >_<

So I guess my search for a cute orange lippie continues!

UPDATE(13/03/2013): Okay, so I've been regularly using this lippie for a week now, and I've noticed the pigmentation of this has improved a lot! Instead of looking like a very sheer gloss, it now does give my lips more of an orange tone (though still not very orange as my lips are pigmented). I guess the top layer of the lipstick isn't as pigmented until you start wearing away at it?

Seems like an improvement, right?

My opinion on this lippie has improved ^^

Sheer, glossy lipsticks - would you try? Or do you prefer a more pigmented lip?

EDIT: Here's the next review on the lippies JOR203, and JPK004 and click here for the review on JPK002, JPK003, and JBE101!

  6. It looks so cute! I bought a couple Etude lipsticks too and I love their color range! I thought their lipsticks are a bit waxy, but the application is surprisingly pretty opaque!

  29. I love etude products. Their packaging is so cute. I prefer pigmented colors. I usually stay away from glossy because it makes my lips big, haha. Have a great weekend~

    The packaging is pretty cute!

I'd have been a bit disappointed with the pigmentation, though.

Have you tried Sleek Coral Reef lipstick? I own that and it really is quite orange. (http://www.sleekmakeup.com/lips/lip-colour/true-colour). Another good one is the Kate Moss by Rimmel lipstick in shade #12, I believe, which is the other go-to for me!

  35. Yep, Etude always has cute packaging ^^
I definitely wish the pigmentation was stronger, though I guess this is more suited to those with less pigmented lips, or those who like sheerer coverage.
I haven't tried any Sleek products yet - but oooh, that lippie looks nice. Thank you for the recs Coconal, I''ll definitely check them out :)
